Advocacy and Speaking for Change:

This course delves into public speaking and advocacy, breaking it down into fundamentals (see what I did there)! Participants begin to grasp the beginnings of their budding voices as emerging leaders in the community. This course is intended to push them out of their comfort zone by testing their resilience, public speaking skills, and self-awareness. Emphasis on effective leadership and advocacy are stressed throughout the course, culminating in a small community service project, showing the girls their potential for change. If there’s one thing they learn in this course, it's that girls run the world! :D

Sustainable Fashion:

In my Ate course, I plan to cover many aspects of sustainable fashion, from what makes the fabric that goes into our clothes to how to make your own clothes more sustainable. Not only will this help mentees lead a more sustainable life, but it will also give them valuable skills such as hand sewing and upcycling to use in the future. Classes will switch between environmental and sustainability discussions and hands-on sewing projects. In the last couple of lessons, the mentees will be able to upcycle a clothing item of their choosing, giving them real-life sewing experience and most importantly, having fun!

Neurobiology of You:

This course is designed to introduce the basics of psychology. Key concepts such as the scientific method, theorizing, and real-world application will be broken down into different hands-on activities and discussions. These activities will help the psych sisters (yes, that’s our official cool group name) learn how the mind and behavior are connected and gain a deeper understanding of emotional intelligence. Other topics such as mindfulness, the mind-body debate, mental health, and the mystery of procrastination will be covered in this curriculum. While psychology is a broad field, I’ve broken it down to keep the psych sisters engaged and interested throughout their time with ATE. I want them to develop a genuine interest in the study, and most of all, to have fun! (^∇^)

Creative Design Outlets:

My course is about using creative design to promote mental wellness. We will be exploring how to use art to manage emotions along with exploring gratitude and mindfulness practices. The girls will be doing a number of different activities including collages, journaling, goal-setting, drawing, and more. We will discuss ways to deal with negative emotions and stress along with the importance of goal setting, mindfulness, and gratitude. Overall I’m striving to create a fun and safe environment where the girls are free to be creative and learn about the importance of mental wellness.

Literary Toolbox:

In this creative writing course, we will explore poems and short stories, and put together an anthology of our works at the end! We will be going over different styles/types of poems (such as haiku and free verse) and short stories (such as fantasy and realistic fiction), and read works of influential women writers as well as marginalized ones. Through this course, the third-grade girls can practice writing creatively and also add to their toolbox to become better writers. This is a super engaging course that encourages girls to explore different types of literature and have fun!
